My specialty!
I enjoy servicing tube amps because I love the sound they reproduce.
This is my passion. Tube amps are making a huge resurgence because you can’t duplicate their sound with solid state amps. Some companies have come close, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades to quote my high school algebra teacher. Curling Too!
Tube amps and especially the vintage amps require a little extra TLC. The voltages present inside these amps are high enough (400 Volts +) to kill you, so if you don’t know what you are doing stay out. Replacing tubes without testing is a huge mistake as the quality control for modern tubes is seriously lacking any quality control and the failure rate can be over 40%. Also, often perfectly good tubes are replaced with perfectly poor tubes. When I say failure rate, I mean new tubes that have low emission or are micro phonic. Technically they are ok, but they are not up to my standards.
There is a lot of mumbo jumbo on the internet when it comes to tubes. I’ve been servicing tube amplifiers for over 30 years and know the difference between fact and fiction.
